Ok......
When a 2yr old gets an oatmeal cookie instead of chocolate Chip one, I expect they'd whine since they probably don't know there are kids out there who likely never have so much as cookie crumb.
In MLP:FIM episode 14 of season 2,a background fan character got a speaking line along with the name fans gave her: Derpy. Derpy hooves, was portrayed as accident prone and a bit silly.
For some reason a few people both brony and others complained that the voice wasn't didn't fit how they imagined it would.
On top of that they went as far as to claim that the show was making fun of autistic kids, simply for giving her a funny deeper voice then most female characters on the show along with goofy behavior.
Hasbro even had to apologize to parents about the unintentional implication the character gave.
---------
The whole thing is ridiculous. There have been plenty of characters in cartoons with voices/looks that didn't match them and made them look stupid, where are the complaints there?
For over protective parents I can understand them over reacting like nut-bars but for the fans who claim to go by the lessons in : Acceptance, tolerance, patience, loyalty, kindness, etc you should know better. Especially if you yourself are a parent.
Your kids learn half what they learn from TV,school, and most importantly you.
The saddest thing of this isn't about some cartoon pony sounds funny but that now we know what peoples ideas of autistic people are.
I've been classes with people with mental problems and autism they don't all sound like they've inhaled helium or something.Crossed eyes don't make you mentally impaired either.

Back in Jr.high school I had to take classes in a small room of kids like myself who had problems with math. JUST math, everything else I was fine with. The class was classified as "Special Ed"
Now I didn't realize other peoples poor knowledge between the mentally impaired or"retards" if you don't mind the term, until one day at lunch.
There was some lady hand out blank green sheets of paper but took a while to tell us what it was for.

2 girls I'd see pass the special ed class room started snickering for some reason the second I sat at the table since it was the only one available.

Girl1:Hey you*waving*
Me:"Hi there."
Girl2:"Aren't you in that special ed class?"
Me: yeah why?
Girl1: Oh nothing just curious...
*looking at the green paper*
Me: Hey,what do you think this is?
Girl1:*speaking slowly* This-is-called-paper-we-use-it-to
Me:* Interrupting*Why are you talking like something is wrong with you?? I know what paper is,I'm asking what are we're going us it for.
Girl2:*looking shocked*"But I thought you were in the special class for retarded people?"
Me:.....No,I just said special ed,its just for helping me with math.
____________
I wondered for years where kids would get that kind of ignorance and thanks to this whole mess, now I know.
Label a cartoon anyway you want but before you act like an ass to real people do your research. That goes for every teen and adult on this site.
__________
Derpy Hooves and all MLP:FIM characters belong to Hasbro.

I have what at the time was considered a very rare and debilitating disability called 'Graphomotor Disability' meaning when YOU look at a scan-tron card you can easily find the bubble for Question 1 answer C right off the bat because your brain recognizes where that bubble is, but in my brain Question 1's answer may as well be on the moon because I can't find it without help. Growing up it pissed lots of teachers off because they had to allow only me to circle the answer on the actual test paper instead of filling in the bubble on the Scan-Tron card which for them meant 'oh god I have to MARK a PAPER instead of putting a card in a machine and letting the machine decide if she fails or passes' I feel the same way Derpy does. I recently had to take an exam for one of my jobs and I had to walk up to the teacher and say 'I can't fill out scan-tron card, I have Spacial Displacement.' followed by an explanation of what my Disability was. Thankfully he was more then happy to sit at the back of the room with me and help me fill out the scan tron bubbles.

I was diagnosed with Autism at age 4, and still occassionally will have problems here and there with it. Now yeah, I was made fun of quite a bit, especially in elementary school, but eventually I just stopped caring about what other people think, realizing that the people who choose to point fingers of insults just because of mental disability are the true morons. Derpy is NOT OFFENSIVE. She is just simply a "ponysona" of something everybody, regardless of who they are, where the come from, etc., does, which is to DERP. Can these soccermoms take their overprotective arms off their children and let them see how the world really is? They can't be safe forever from the world.

Look, it's a well known fact among those who know it well that retards autistic kids are either crazy shut-ins with magical mental abilities, like cracking FBI codes, or people who bump into walls and say 'durr' a lot. Hell, we all know the stupid voice right? It instantly means they're not able to even tie their own shoes.

why I remember when *I* was SpecEd, I used to... well no I didn't. But that was because I was ADD, the opposite of autism. Now my brother he... well no he didn't either...

I had a great friend who caught a cold at 8 and got brain inflammation. She has (I think, can't remember now) cerebral palsy and really DID sound classically retarded and was oft treated as such. She was perfectly sharp underneath it all thought, something that endlessly pissed her off. I can't imagine living like that.

people these days.....soooo judgmental.....im glad noones made fun of my autistic bro...he's epic......except when he's diabolically laughing at 3:00 in the morning....but yeah, i agree with the point ur making, people shouldnt be descriminated because theyre in special ed or BOCES or whatever... they may act weird sometimes, but dont we all? we're all humans, & we all have weirdness and quirks..:iconbrohugplz:
